Why do I see mostly small birds at the suet bird feeders instead of the large birds? Although you will see plenty of large bird feeding at suet feeders, the small birds have a higher metabolism. The more difficult it is for the birds to find pure fat for their diet, the more calories they burn off. By providing a reliable suet feeder, especially in the winter, you can really make a difference for your birds.
When the temperatures rise, suet dough cakes can take the place of pure suet cakes in these feeders. The dough won't melt as readily. You can find plain suet but why not try the suet cakes with added ingredients such as seeds, insects, fruit, peanuts or berries?
What birds could I see if I add suet bird feeders? To name a few: chickadees, woodpeckers, bluebirds, cardinals, buntings, thrashers, kinglets, orioles, nuthatches, catbirds, titmice, jays, mockingbirds, wrens, grosbeaks, tanagers and sparrows. We probably left out a few. Let us know what birds you are seeing at your suet feeders!
What is suet? Suet is rendered beef fat.
Why do some of your suet feeders have a paddle-like piece at the bottom? Large woodpeckers like to prop themselves up on their tails. These paddle extensions create the most appealing feeding position. If you have larger woodpeckers in your area, you might wish to provide them with the added comfort.
Insect-eating birds benefit from the addition of suet bird feeders especially in early spring and winter when the insect population is sparse. Some wild birds arrive back to the states before the insects are in full business mode and the birds will be starved for the needed fat that suet can provide.
What else can I feed the birds that would help them survive while the insects are scarce? Peanuts. Offer them the high protein of peanuts, whole peanuts, peanut pieces and other nuts.
When you begin to feed suet for the first time make a note about the suet-eating birds in your area. Don't buy a pantry full of suet cakes yet. It may take birds a while to discover your new suet feeders. Once they begin to show up, learn about those birds. Would they like berries, insects, seeds, peanuts in their suet cakes? You have all the time in the world to find out. Don't be discouraged if you choose a flavor they don't respond to. This is probably new to them also!! Give them time over the weeks and months (and years) because their preferences may grow and vary.

Suet is a very popular bird food. It ranks at the top with sunflower seeds. The high fat content is vital to birds for much of the year. If you are wanting to attract certain wild birds we can help you. The nuthatch is attracted to insects and seeds so look for suet cakes which have insects and seeds embedded in the suet. These blends usually have peanuts and corn included which is great. Use these cakes in your suet feeders if you wish to attract nuthatches. Woodpeckers are lucky enough to have their own blend of suet cakes. They will like the beef of the suet but also be attracted to peanuts, oats and millet. They will also like suet cakes with cracked corn, almonds, pecans and walnuts in their suet feeders if you set these out. Peanut suet cakes, which are plentiful, have been known to attract bluebirds, chickadees, flickers, kinglets, mockingbirds, nuthatches, orioles, tanagers, titmice, towhees, warblers, woodpeckers, and wrens. Don't be afraid to offer the suet with hot pepper ingredients. This will keep the squirrels away but your wild birds will still eat it. Some of the fruit or berry blends avoid using real berries and fruit because they will not stay fresh. Instead they use flavoring of favorite berries and fruits but keep the ingredients to the standard beef suet, peanuts and grain. Raisins seem to be the exception. You can find raisins in rendered beef suet blends. Return to top of page

Do you have flying squirrels in your area? They may be enjoying your suet feeders too. If you notice flying squirrels in your platform bird feeders, try adding some chunks of suet too.
Combination bird feeders will attract a larger number of birds. If you don't wish to have multiple feeders spread around your property but wish to have the action concentrated for easy viewing, a combination seed and suet feeder is the answer.
If you have woodpecker habitat in your area, and you probably do because it is so varied, or if you have seen woodpeckers you should be able to lure them in to suet feeders. Initially it would be a good idea to place the feeder near a tree trunk. Unlike many other birds, woodpeckers don't zip around exploring every inch of your human habitat. They WILL however probe the nooks and crannies of your trees looking for invertebrates. Woodpeckers eat mostly insects but you can bring them into view with your suet feeders. Offer suet cakes with peanuts. There are special Woodpecker Suet Blends too. Water will draw woodpeckers also. We currently have two red-bellied woodpeckers visiting our creek daily.
Let us know how you serve up suet in your yard. We'll be happy to share it with other bird watchers right here.
