Mealworm Bird FeedersBluebirds can't resist mealworms but do not use the largest size. The birds won't eat them. If you have bluebirds in your area (Eastern, Mountain or Western Bluebirds) they should be attracted to mealworm bird feeders. If the bluebirds have food, bluebird bird houses and water, they should stay awhile.
Keep the mealworms easy to see when you first wish to attract bluebirds. An open tray would be ideal. Once it has been established that you are offering the mealworms, you can use the special feeders which allow the bluebirds to enter through holes on either side of the feeders. These feeders will help keep the mealworms for your bluebirds instead of larger birds such as woodpeckers. Initially, the birds will need easier access. Mealworms will appeal to other birds that eat caterpillars and earthworms such as American Robins. Some woodpeckers, wrens and warblers may appreciate finding these mealworms available too. Pick the smaller mealworms for use in the feeders. Mealworms are the larvae of meal beetles. If you are raising your own mealworms indoors, be certain to use a tightly sealed container and keep it in the refrigerator. Bluebirds will also eat suet, chopped peanuts or peanut butter dough products. Check with your local Audubon Society to learn which berries and fruits to plant to appeal to bluebirds. If the jail style feeders have plexiglass sides, you can train the bluebirds first with one side removed. After the birds become comfortable using the feeders, add the side back to the feeders. The birds will find their way back in to keep enjoying the mealworms. |

You may raise mealworms yourself. It takes very little maintenance to do so. Did you know that large companies and farms raise mealworms on a large scale? One of the largest companies sells 600 tons of live mealworms per year and another 200 tons of dried mealworms. People eat dried mealworms too but we haven't investigated that side of the market. Hmm. Specially designed feeders give you the opportunity to feed your birds a high protein diet of mealworms. Whether you choose an open tray design or the see through wall or wire feeder design, your bluebirds and other wild birds will benefit from your generosity. |
