I was not expecting them just yet, because we usually see them late April into May. I will be making my nectar today and getting ready to watch them while I sit on my porch swing. Sometimes they swoop so close to our heads we think we are going to get hit. They are a joy to watch. Thanks, - Tonya R. Luker |

4/22/05 | Magnificent (?) | On Friday, April 22 (Earth Day) my husband was outside when a hummingbird flew around the corner and looked at him intently before flying away. We recently moved to Southeast Arkansas from Colorado and didn’t know to expect hummingbirds. We prepared a feeder and since then two hummingbirds have been visiting several times a day. I had not seen a hummingbird like this one but I am pretty sure it is a magnificent hummingbird from the description and photos I found on the web. Sandy T. |

| cordless phone out on my patio yesterday morning and she flew by my head, stopped in mid air and turned around as if to say "gosh i missed you", she had a mouth full of building material so I knew what she was up to. I don't have to look very far as every year for the past 15 years either she or the off spring have built a nest in the vines of a hanging pot right outside of my living room window. I feel I am blessed having the opportunity to see the entire building procedure. I watched her take spider webs and floating seeds from the trees that are starting to leave now. She takes a mouth full of webs and takes it to her leaf and I can watch her STOMP the nest into shape. I have told my husband she does this just for my pure enjoyment. In years past she has always laid 2 eggs, I beleive in only 2 of the years that they have been around, that the babies did not make it to maturity. We love watching them, from now until the babies leave the nest I probably will not get too much done as she expects me to keep an eye on the building progress and of course watching the babies grow. - Marilyn | |||

| Porterville | 4/23/06 | - | OBSERVATIONS: about 3 weeks ago we had 35 or more humming birds so many I went and bought 7 more feeders because they were attacking each other and became so a gressive I had to place a sign warning my visitors that my humming birds attack. |
|
Any person who would dare to step foot on my front poarch was in for a real treat . my self and my husband were the only 2 people who could stand with in a foot and not be attacked we got some great shots with our camara. I did not know that the birds migtared now there are only 5 or 6 birds sticking around. 2 days ago my husband set in the house and watched as a humming bird came in our house and harvested spider webs out of our living room to build its nest I thought he was full of it until I came home and seen it for my self . The last time it came in it tried to get the webs from behind the curtian and got stuck in the corner of the window I had to get a towel to get it out I was afraid the it was going to knock its self out. I live in Porterville CA I would like to know where humming birds migrate to and when should I expect my beautiful birds to return I miss them for about 3 months I had a wonderful time with them and now Feel lost with out my flying wonders of nature. - Darla C. He wouldn't fly up, could just hover, buzzing, in a circle. This year I put the feeder out by April 17, and had my first bird that I saw there by April 28.I usually get anywhere from 15 or so birds each year at a time. I have three feeders. This year there is a change for them because a bush that they'd go to for cover was cut down in the lot beside mine, so I'm busy trying to plant some bushes for them for cover in my yard, along with some bushes and flowers for them to enjoy nectar from! I spend lots of time with "my hummers" and even had them landing on my fingers. The cat was staring out the window one morning, sitting in my dogwood tree located a couple of feet from my window perched the male and the female sitting on a thin branch of the tree. Both then flew into the air, belly bumped in mid air, then flew away. The male often perches outside the window where he and the cat appear to be staring each other down........Very fascinating birds! We reside in Dillsburg, PA. - Connie Holley | |||

Calliope and Rufous |
1/7/02 - Sunday morning we had a near adult male Rufous Hummingbird visit our lone hummingbird feeder in the back yard. (continued) |
| He was the first hummer we have seen at home this winter, and the first identifiable Selasphorus ever in the yard in the couple of years we have been there. In the twilight his morning, a hummer came in to the feeder and sat down for a nice long drink. Expecting the Rufous, I grabbed the binoculars and was stunned to see an adult male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD. He continued to come back every 20 minutes or so until I left around 8:30. No sign of the Rufous today. Most of our other winter hummingbirds have been one day wonders, so I don't know if he will stay long. I put up extra feeders and fresh food just in case. - TEXBIRDS archive - JO | |||

We live in Onalaska, Texas on Lake Livingston. We saw our first hummers March 12, 02. They were active on the feeders till May, |
| then they slowed down a little till Aug. We do always have them on a daily basis, but they are very active again and still are as of 9-01-02. Usually I change the feeders every 3 days. I am now changing the feeders 2-3 times a day. There are times when there are 10-15 at a time swarming the feeder. I have 2 feeders out but it seems that they always pick one that they first see in spring and usually stay active on that one more than the other throughout the year. I was able to get some great pictures of them this year. I just hate to see them go till nest spring - Tammy S. | |||

Our first hummingbird arrived April 9, 2003 a little before 4:30 pm. We live in Corinth, TX (north of Dallas, just south of Denton in Denton County). I'm pretty sure it's a female ruby throat. She's VERY hungry and didn't mind sipping at the feeders two feet from where we stood watching! - The Silvers |

| I have been keeping track for about six years now and either on April 13, or 15. This year it was the 13th, at 3:14 p.m. A lone bird, I believe a Blackchinned male came and stayed in the honeysuckle until about 15 min. before total darkness, and left. No sign since. We have a number of regulars each year that we recognize by their individual markings.(males that is, the females are a bit tougher to tell apart!)It seems that each year we make the first sighting and then we don't see them for awhile. One year it was almost 7 weeks. I was just about to give them up and one morning I woke up to find them in the crabapple tree as usual, and they were their usual selves for the remainder of the season. Each year we put up more feeders in hopes of getting a real 'group' going. I think we have about 12 to 1 5 birds that are regulars. Mostly Rubythroats, both male and female. Last season,(99) we had at least 2 pairs of Blackchinned. Our birds have been known to stay as late as the week after Thanksgiving(only once) and leave as early as the 2nd week in Sept. (99) . Anyway, we will see what happens this year! I am watching for the little guys even now hoping to see them in their regular antics for the season. Happy Humming! Howard (Wingnut) | |||

| But it was one of those things where as you look, you think something just buzzed by. The next afternoon, my husband thought he saw one fly by, but wasn't sure. Today, however, Easter Sunday April 23, 2000 the we had a male Ruby Throated Hummingbird sitting on the perch of our feeder to have his breakfast. He has been back off and on all day. They are absolutely beautiful, and we watch them all summer long. However, we have never tried to get one to land on our hands. - Marguerite H. | |||

| I'm certainly a novice. I noticed then on April 30, 2001, hung the feeders and within a couple of hours, a hummer appeared. Last summer, August-September, I had 4 feeders going at all times and probably had 15-20 birds around. I hope I have that many this year. It's so fun to watch them. - Nancy | |||

| Argyle | 6/27/03 | - | Hi! We saw our first hummingbird on June 27, 2003. My 3 yr old daughter went nuts! We have a Purple flowering pot (have to ask my wife what kind of plant it is) on a bird bath. |
| He buzzed around it for a moment and then landed a few times in the small tree next to the feeder. We have seen one each day since...only one. We put a feeder out today so maybe that will help. The only sightings we have are in the morning...is this strange? We live in Argyle, TX just south of Corinth and west of Flowermound, TX. Joe, Jeannie, Abigayle and Andrew. | |||

8/27/03 | Rufous Black- chinned Ruby- throated |
Today 8/27/03, we here in potosi, Tx. , the same ones that are already on the list for the black chinned saw a male rufus. Out of the clear blue, we were just so surprised. This makes 3 species for us because of course we have the ruby throated. We were told that the rufus didn't come to our area, and that we were not in their migration pattern. What LUCK! |
| Please add this to our existing sightings on the spring arrival chart. We are the only ones on the list from Potosi, Tx, just SE of Abilene!! | |||

September (2000) | Rufous | We normally host Black-chinned and Ruby-throated hummingbirds. (continued) |
| A new hummingbird showed up and stayed from Sept. 11 - 16th. It was probably a Rufous but it had a very green back, bright orange tail and spotted color on the gorget. * * * * * Dec. 19, 2000 - Jan. 20, 2001 Another (or same) probable Rufous showed up. This time there is more splotching at the lower edge of the gorget forming a necklace. Again, the back is green. * * * * * Nov. '01 - Spring '02 Had as many as four rufous hummingbirds. One full adult male stayed for the whole winter. He was an amazing fellow! He was very secretive, hiding in the eleagnus shrubs most of the time. On sunny warm days, he was at the tree tops looking for insects. |
