Short and Helpful Blog Notes - Bird Feeders

Hummingbird Feeders and Standard Bird Feeders

3/14/04
Should you place hummingbird feeders away from other bird feeders? Yes, this is probably the smartest idea considering that hummingbirds are so territorial. Hummingbirds can get caught up chasing every other bird out of your yard. There is no reason to precipitate this behaviour by placing the feeders close to your other feeders. We've seen our hummingbird fly right up into the faces of birds including screech-owls so they can feel compelled to defend their feeding spots from all competition.

Be Sure to Add a Water Feature

6/23/05
Not only will birds drink from your shallow water feature but they may bathe in it also which could lead to flocks of birds visiting for either a drink or a bath. We find it best to create multiple depths of water. This can be accomplished by adding pebbles to your water feature. Drippers will really attract wild birds. Misters can bring birds out of the woods and hummingbirds love them.

Bird Feeders are Photo Opportunities

5/4/07
Bird feeders provide photo opportunities for homebound bird watchers. Window bird feeders are particularly helpful for this pursuit. Often light reflects off the window and the birds can not see you on the other side. Each summer we enjoy Painted Buntings inches from our eyes. If you are lucky enough during spring migration you may get photographs of rare birds to report to your local Rare Bird Alert Hotline.

Don't Stop With Seeds

7/9/06
If you haven't branched out from seed bird feeders, you don't know what you might be missing. Suet feeders, fruit feeders, nectar feeders, peanut feeders, mealworm feeders are a few of the choices and they will attract more wild birds than you would expect. It may take the birds some time to learn about these new feeders but once they do you'll be rewarded with a greater variety of birds in your landscape. You also increase your chances of seeing families at the feeders. Woodpeckers will bring their fledglings to the suet feeders. Ours have been dependable every year. They don't fear us so we usually get excellent views of them.

Keeping Feeders Clean

Be sure to clean your feeders to protect the birds and yourself. Dilute bleach or vinegar, immerse the feeders and scrub all parts and rinse, rinse, rinse. Learn more about keeping your bird feeders clean . . .
